Survey on Fault Identification, Detection and Classification Techniques in Power Transmission Line Systems

Protecting transmission lines using a fast and effective fault detection technique is a significant requirement for maintaining a reliable power flow supply in electrical power transmission and distribution systems. In order to differentiate between the defective and the safe phase(s), transmission line faults should be rapidly detected and defective phases should be accurately classified. This paper provides a analysis of various methodologies for classifying transmission line faults. Efforts have been made to include almost all the transmission line methods and philosophies mentioned in the literature. For a reliable and high-speed protective relay followed by digital distance protection, fault classification is important. A suitable study of these techniques is therefore necessary. This survey provides a full overview of the methods used in various transmission line configurations for fault detection, fault section identification, fault classification and fault position assessment.
