LEVULINIC ACID PRODUCTION: A PROSPECTIVE COMPONENT FOR THE FOOD AND PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRIES
Levulinic acid can be made in a variety of ways, including synthesis, biosynthesis, and extraction. The manufacture of levulinic acid by these processes results in the discharge of hazardous gases and trash. Therefore, it is necessary to produce levulinic acid using an environmentally benign approach. Levulinic acid is produced using a variety of substrates, including xylose, maltose, and sucrose. Additionally, the bio method produces toxic wastes and uses H2SO4 and HCl as pre-treatments during the fermentation process to produce levulinic acid. The goal of the current research is to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of producing levulinic acid by synthetic, biological, and extraction approaches.
