CHARACTERISATION OF SEAM STRENGTH AND SEAM SLIPPAGE ON COTTON FABRIC WITH WOVEN STRUCTURES AND FINISH

Dr.M.VARNAYADEVI and B.LAVANYA

The fabric quality and seam requirements have an impact on how long a garment will last. While fabric quality was managed in the current work, the garment's durability now depends on the seam's properties, such as seam strength, slippage, puckering, and yarn severance. In the current work, cotton fabrics were created using a range of woven structures, including plain, twill, and satin, in varied blend proportions. Utilizing silicone, these fabrics underwent a fabric softening process. All of the aforementioned tests were followed by an investigation into seam strength and seam slippage for both finished and unfinished materials. The seam strength and seam slippage were examined using the instron tensile strength tester. The experiments were conducted at 6.0mm breaking load, and it was found that the unfinished samples' breaking loads showed greater strength than the finished without seam opening. The plain weave fabric samples performed better at seams than the twill and satin samples, it was discovered. A number of other variables that affect seam strength and slippage are also covered in detail.
